Kentmere Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Celebrated 125 Years by Honoring Its Legacy and Looking to the Future

Wilmington, Delaware: Kentmere Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in Wilmington, Delaware celebrated its 125th anniversary by honoring its rich history while embracing a vision for the future of care. Centered around the theme, Celebrating a Legacy of Love and Care, the milestone recognized more than a century of dedication to older adults and their families while highlighting the organization’s continued commitment to growth, innovation, and excellence.

Despite challenging weather conditions, approximately 70 residents, family members, team members, board members, donors, elected officials, and community partners gathered to commemorate the occasion.

“We are proud to honor our history, and we are equally excited about our future,” said Executive Director Leslie Johnson. She also expressed gratitude to residents, family members, staff, board members, generous donors, elected officials, and community partners for their ongoing support.

A Legacy Begins

Founded in 1901 as the Home of Merciful Rest, Kentmere has long been a women-led and women operated organization, shaping its identity through generations of leadership and service. As Delaware’s earliest private nonprofit nursing and convalescent home, Kentmere has grown into a longstanding pillar of compassionate care in the Wilmington community.

The community’s impact was recognized by elected officials who shared messages commemorating the anniversary.

In a letter, U.S. Senator Christopher Coons wrote, “Kentmere is a place of compassion and respect, providing for those in need. From its beginnings as Delaware’s earliest private nonprofit nursing home, Kentmere has grown into a pillar of the Wilmington community. Our state is appreciative of everything you do.”

Delaware Congresswoman Sarah McBride praised Kentmere’s “enduring commitment” as reflecting “the very best of Delaware’s values, service, kindness and care for our neighbors.” She added that Kentmere “serves as an example of what the First State can accomplish when we invest in quality care and support our dedicated caregivers.”

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

While the anniversary celebrated Kentmere’s rich history, it also marked an important moment of renewal and momentum. Under new leadership, the organization is building on its longstanding tradition of compassionate care while introducing meaningful enhancements designed to elevate the resident experience and strengthen services for generations to come.

In recent months, Kentmere earned the highest possible Five-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and improved resident and family satisfaction as reflected in stronger online ratings.

Investments are also underway throughout the community, including enhancements to dining services that will create a more upscale culinary experience, expansion of the short-term rehabilitation program, and renovations to shared community spaces that promote comfort, connection, and engagement.

Looking ahead, Kentmere is making a substantial commitment to memory care through the development of an innovative program supported by state-of-the-art technology, specialized equipment, and person-centered programming designed to enrich residents’ lives while providing greater support and peace of mind for families.

These advancements reflect Kentmere’s vision for the future by preserving the values that have guided the organization for 125 years while embracing new opportunities to deliver exceptional care and services.
